No comparison. Those designs were scrapped years ago, and for good reason, namely for tent to vehicle seal failures, and too small of space. Read up on the history of the CTTs of Africa and Australia.

Lucky you! When I had a Land Rover I always wanted a roof tent, but thought it too expensive to justify in the wet and windy UK. They are immensely cool, though make you a bit top heavy.

looks retarted to me. the awning is ok, but a tent on the roof of an SUV ??? why? put it on the ground.

Land down under they have nasty critters (snakes, scorpions, spiders)that like to sleep with you. Tent on top of a car its harder for them to get in.

How about one of the little beauties instead?

Though, I do like the one on the Aztec because it has heat & AC. I suppose the one above does as well except you get heat in the summer and AC in the winter.

My brother had one of these car top campers 30 years ago.

He had a really crappy job in the summer while in college.

He had to travel around the midwest and he slept in the camper all the time.

Those would be neat in Rhino country. Probably would keep snakes out though.

Why did you have to post this Dapper Dan? I miss my Landie Defender that the idiotic TPTB wouldn't let me bring to Canada.:bawling::bawling::bawling:

The Jeep is great, but it is not the same somehow. Miss you 'Cuthbert' :bawling:

Yes, I suppose I did not consider some of the larger animals one would want to keep out. I was thinking mostly about insects and snakes like you said. Most predators can climb fairly well though admittedly not a rhino.

I was thinking you could plop one of these little guys down in a mountain stream (as long as it don't rain) and sleep right on top of cold water. Plus, you could hike it down narrow trails. If it rains? No big deal and no digging ditches around your tent. All in all ... I really like these little tents.

I actually think it looks a good tent. It would probably do the job to keep you away from snakes and so on. I wish I could post photos properly. A rhino went nuts and hopped on the bonnet of a Volvo in a game park in the UK some years ago.

Volvo were very quick, within a day they had an ad out with a photo of the Volvo with the rhino on the bonnet (the Volvo was able the keep moving) that said 'It is a jungle out there!' Very good!

I'd rather be on the roof of the Land Rover than on the ground when one of those turned up! Do not suppose the height would deter a leopard though.

The typical survival scenario, one cannot plan for everything.

I was in North Yorkshire once watching a bunch of sheep trash a tent in a remote place. Swaledales, with horns, both sexes. Nasty little buggers. 'Combat Sheep'. Sheep can be absolute devils, contrary to popular opinion. I do hope this rule holds true in a GIM sense.:23_1_22:

Don't forget about the exhaust fumes from running the vehicle... Another reason interior attached tents never took off overseas.

Best bet is an independent heat/cooling source.

Car topper is not for me thanks. Don't keep out Grizz or Mountain Lions. And looks atrocious. Why bother?

That raised tent is interesting. Personally I prefer a small topper, sleeper or camper in predator country. With tent or shading for day use for a longer stay.

You've obviously never been to a music festival where it rained for days before or during the event. I would have killed for one of these at Coventry or Bonnaroo '04.

I've been to Bonaroo 5 times: '03 through '07.

I'd love an old school VW bus with pop-up roof. No rhino would attempt to mount that.

My next door neighbor down in L.A. was the owner of "Rover Accessories". He had one of his Rovers all decked out with one of those roof tents, and all of the other gear as well. That was over 5 years ago, so I think this stuff has been here in the states for awhile. Not cheap, that's for sure. http://www.roveraccessories.com/
